You may want to find out more about the subject here. http://steamcommunity.com/games/Skyrim/announcements/detail/139952470913885583 So far we know that: -This applies to Skyrim -It may be applied to other games in the future -It ain't gonna be cheap for you -Valve gets 75% of the profit and calls it a way to support the mod creators -No, you cannot donate money to the creators directly -Instead, Valve deletes every single donatitation link if they are present in the mod page -Not all mods cost, but those that do, tend to cost about 0,20 - 20,00€ -Valve has deleted threads from Steam regarding this issue What can we do? -Write a negative review about Skyrim -Report Skyrim -Do not support Valve by buying products -Do not buy from marketplace -Do not add Steam funds -Share this information, it's time that the community does something.
Seriously? You only got two minutes to edit your post? Can't the timer be like 15 minutes, you can't add polls or anything in two minutes.
This sucks uncleaned ass, damnit Valve. I'll be sure not to buy jack from Skyrim. Bloody scammers Valve are. And yeah I also noticed the short amount of time to edit things whilst making threads... It is very annoying.
I used to download mods on the workshop for Skyrim (just 'cause how stupidly easy it is). Now i'll just get my mods on Nexus. But yeah, bad move Valve, bad move...
[why can't I edit my posts anymore?] In honor of the paid mods, valve introduced their new controller:
Ok, we should be concerned of this issue, since this menace is moving to Garry's Mod as well. Bloody hell, I'm gonna backup my mod files just in case. http://garry.tv/2015/04/24/paying-for-mods/ Garry's Mod has even more mods than Skyrim, we should expect that this pay to use policy is moving to other games as well. Sure, there'll always be free mods but we shouldn't allow Steam to monetize us like this, there should be a donate button where the creator gets like 85% of the money.
You're all making far too big a deal out of this. https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/33uplp/mods_and_steam/?sort=qa
I noticed that Gaben didn't ansrew a single post regarding the donatitation option. Most of his post were about his personal life and that the game developers decide how much money they take.
If you say so,I seem to remember reading some kind of reply about someone mentioning donations, but I could be wrong,I read this yesterday evening and was pretty tired (I also can't be bothered to go look for it now). I think you could've also picked a more rational reply than that one. There were a few newer ones yesterday that on top of critique also brought ideas on how to improve the system to the table. (That seemed more like an open discussion rather than accusations and venting in short). Either way I think you're too much noise about this. There will still be free mods, moders will be able to get some money for their work assuming they want to charge and stupid people will buy shit mods and shit games like they always have.Perhaps when the system is fleshed out a bit we'll see some quality control, after all I remember a time of Battlefield 3 being on Greenlight.
Modding was always a community driven thing. The moment money is involved expect more crap quality mods to flood the steam market. 0/10.
I don't want to start arguing but I have to point out that's not donation. They still take 75% of the sales and many modders will not offer the decision to donate because they want money. Spoiler: Happy merchant Sure, there are always free mods, pirate or not. But I feel compassion to other people who don't pirate. I don't even play Skyrim, yet I'm outraged, since all of this is just corporate greed. The modders should get the 75%, not the other way around and there shouldn't be pay to use policy, just donation. We're the customers who pay their salaries, we're allowed complain about their policies.
Be that as it may I don't think that the common gamer has a reason to complain here. We've established that there will be a price set by the mod maker and also established (Something that, forgive me if I misread, you don't seem to grasp yet) the price cut is set by the company that made the game. I still have trouble understanding what the big deal here is.I mean I can understand how this could have problems down the line if mistreated but it also offers a way for people to profit off of the things they love doing. It's only natural that the games developer (And subsequently Steam) get a share of the profit. I fully agree that it's corporate greed, they have plenty of money, but letting someone profit of off your back is bad for business.Try to picture this in the real world and it makes a lot more sense. And one last thing.I was trying to get a discussion going and not an argument. (Hopefully I didn't skip any words while writing this time!)
I think this will go down the same road as DLC did. First off people complained a lot, then they bought all crap thrown at them. I do not mind paying for actual added content - and we all know how rare this has become. The result of this can be seen in all AAA titles of these days. Release version costs 60-70 euros and offers 6-8 hours of mediocre content. 2-3 more hours are added later on for another 20-30 euros. If it is content and not a season pass mostly including weapon reskins or other rubbish. The main issue with mods for sale actually is who owns them. Many mods build on other modders' work. That aside it'll just make the companies even lazier. A game is broken? A game has close to no content in a huge world? The modding scene is going to fix it and we'll take 75% of the income they created. First examples with free mods have been there. Think of the vehicle promises in Red Orchestra 2: "Oh, we have no time for that now but we are sure the modders will add some soon". Of course it is nice if modders get some praise verbally and via donations if their work is good. But for the most part - even in most modders' opinion - it is a hobby and not business. Hasn't kept me from donating for a few great mod projects like those making older games available on modern systems. If people actually start paying for sword-skins in Skyrim or the like the gaming scene is going to hell for sure. Wouldn't even be undeserved then.
The worst part about this is IMO the fact that if you have a paid mod and the dev' decide to patch the game and somehow break the mod, you ge no refund and have to hope the modder find a way to make the mod works again.
...and they scrapped it... http://steamcommunity.com/games/SteamWorkshop/announcements/detail/208632365253244218
