Yes, I don't know what they're doing in that country over there, but here's the story.

In July last year, a 30 year old Belgian driver was caught while drifting on a roundabout, he received a fine and was not allowed to drive for 4 months.

But now a Belgian judge has decided that the driver has to read the book from A. F. Th. van der Heijden called Tonio. This book is about how a father deals with the loss of his 21 year old son that was hit by a car while riding his bike. (True story)

The driver will get some time to read the book, and after that the court will interrogate him to see if he actually read the book. If he fails the test, he will get another 32 months in which is he is not allowed to drive.

Though I think it's a good thing that guy is going to read the book about what might happen if he continues the idiotic behaviour, I think it's ridiculous that a court can sentence someone to read a book and give him a test to see whether he did it... What if the guy is stressed out completely and gets a black out. Because he is a sucky student, he'll get more punishment. That is just stupid. :|

    Opinions?

Its a policejudge...similar to justice of the peace. Nothing really serious.

So the driver should be pleased to get such a low punishment. It's a creative way to give a presumably dumb driver (who didnt red the book...idiot) something else then community service (like most cases).

And for the black out...dont motherly embrase people. You have to deal with stress situation in live, deal with it. Its not like the book exam will be a big exam by comparing his work with other writers, while explaining the cross over elements whit our society.

on a further note: how would you test someone if he red the book or not?
And you dont know how the exam is made: Q&A ? writing a short storyline of the book? discussion on what he has learned from the book?

Why use the national card ? :D We are European citizens obeying the European court :p

it's not like he was speeding on the roundabout.
Good car control = good car control. I would drive with him anytime. A friend of mine who is totally not interested in cars. In any way possible, they are just a means to get from A to B. I am absolutly terrified when i step into his slow as a boat peugeot 207. The man just can't drive. He's unable to foresee what other people are going to do. My friend is more likely to be in another crash then the guy with car control.
But i can see the point where it's a public road. He needs to do it on a track or closed parking lots

And don't worry about the exam. It's not going to be anything hard. I had a work sentence from that court once. For speeding with a scooter. ( because the thing got over 50, it was suddenly a motorcycle, so then i had no insurance and no license for it )
Gave me the easiest 20 work hours in my life. I needed to help the handyman at the administrative offices of my town. He didn't know what to do to keep himself busy the entire day. Let alone me helping him do it... :)

Come on, it's just reading a book and getting an exam about it. it's not learning a complete japanese dictionary for tomorrow! He's 30, not 16. If he can't handle it, he should go back to high/middle school, where you have to read like 3 books in different languages and do an exam about them.

Also, are you just shifting your debate assignment to us? cuz that's really lazy. :p

I don't get debate assignments. I give them. noobs. And no, this is not school or debate related, saw it on the news and thought it was funny.

Besides, it's not that I think he's going to fail, or that it's hard. It's merely the concept, if you fail to pass a test, you get punished by lawcourt. THAT is stupid. In this case it would relatively easy, though the book has like 640 pages or something, but I was talking in a general sense.

    Crazy guys living there...

The point is why 32 months ? Ok 32 is 2^5, but 32 months is 2.6666 years. This number sucks really hard. It could have been 24 30 or 36, no, this dumbass judge said 32...

He already had 4 months, so if he failed the test, the total punishment would become 36 months = 3 years. Who's dumb now
