A mathematical riddle

    A = B <Non-zero quantities
    A² = AB <Multiplied through A
    A² - B² = AB - B² <Subtracted B²
    (A - B)(A + B) = B(A - B) <Factored both sides
    A + B = B <Divided out (A - B)
    B + B = B <Back to the start, stated that A equals B
    2B = B <Combined terms
    2 = 1 <Divided by B as non-zero quantity

    Two equals one, Q.E.D.

    If you can find the single error, I tip my hat to you. (And if you're the first one to find it, there will be a reclaimed metal waiting for you in my backpack)

    What Rex says. Cool story, bro.
    Since A equals B, you're dividing by zero.

    Yeh, and as far as I know you can not divide by 0

    @Tang: nope.

    Today I read in a newspaper that like 70-something- percent of the people the researchers asked couldn't correctly answer the next one. Kinda stupid...

    A guy from a promotion campaign is given the task to hand out 323 [insert product here] in a mall.
    He has to make sure everyone gets an equal amount of products and everybody should get more than 1.
    At the end he has 18 products left.

    The "puzzle" was originally designed for 8-10 year olds.

    For 8-10 year olds? Sounds kinda challenging to me for people that age.

    323 - 18 = 305, which is easily divided by 5, if "getting more than one" is the only requirement. This would result in 61 people getting an equal amount (5) as opposed to eachother.

    Could 70 percent really not answer that?

    Or five people with 61 each, obviously.

    Killvion: Yes, it's easy for you and me, who went to Highschool or similar, and who gathered experience in maths during this time.
    I still doubt that your average 8 years old could solve this though.

    We should see if COD players can answer this question, then we're atleast know if 12 year olds can solve this riddle with no question! :D

    I looked it up again in the news paper I read it. And I indeed forgot to mention that the goal of the riddle was to find out how many people got stuff, and that you'd have to go for lowest possible answer above 1.

    And it was indeed meant for 8-10 year olds, however on a school for the gifted. So super smart 8 year olds...

    Oh and the researchers asked a whole bunch of "famous' Dutch persons. Mostly actors and tv show hosts.

    IQ vs penis size

    We Belgians always come shorter on the Dutch's by 0,02 cm...I guess there ego makes it a little thicker ;)

    And we have an excuse on our lower IQ (-1point) we would be top1 if it wasn't for our southern neighbors :p
