When producing concept art, our artists believe in providing a variety of options for any given subject. A single concept rendering would constrain the resulting game design too much. As the gameplay gets worked on and refined, having several concept renderings provides much needed inspiration and raw material to work with and lets us use visual design as a tool to widen game interaction possibilities as much as possible.

In the case of the Flaregun, the concept artist provided the rest of the team with a bunch of different designs - various combinations of size, shape, color, and even functionality. The final design choice was a result of gameplay-related decisions, which were then proven effective through playtesting and further iterative design.
