So yeah, me and the rest of England fail at other languages (as you can tell).

I was playing on L4D2 last night when Khadgar went, "so Alias when are you going to learn Dutch". So being bored before work I thought I would try and learn some key words in it.

All was going well, when I realised. Huh wtf, this is the same as German.

So can someone please give me a explanation about how these 2 languages are different? IM CONFUSED D:

    Dank u.

    They are different lol. :p

"Dank u" is for example "Danke". Apart from that I don't know a word german except for sheisse (that means poep in dutch). :|

    It's 'scheisse', Luke :p
@Alias: For someone who doesn't speak German or Dutch they may sound similar. However, I can tell you that there IS a difference.
If there's something written in Dutch, then I'll most likely be able to understand the basic meaning. However, as soon as someone's talking Dutch, I have no idea what he's trying to say. ^^

well, we're based of the same language which were spoken before The Netherlands or Germany existed. the civilisation which lived on our countries were called Germania I think.

also germany got those Nahmfalle or something. that with: we just have 'een' (= a, an) they have 4 lists with different stuff with eines, einem etc.
(i think..it's been a year since I had the horrors of learning german on my school, I absolutely sucked in it )

oh and don't think we can immediately speak/understand german, it's really different :p some words sound like the same but have different meanings. :p

You made a mistake there, fixed it four you. :D

But you're right, a big difference between German and English, (and obviously Dutch), is, that german nouns have a gender, which affects the 'words before the nouns'. I can imagine myself that this makes it difficult to learn. ^^

Same. I can understand some sentences bot not much of them. I've had about 4 years german lessons on school but the teacher was so bad at teaching that I forgot everything (or didn't learn anything). Did score a 7 at my exam, don't ask how..
Maybe that was because 90% of the exam was in text, that's a lot easier yeah :p

Lucky you are really bad, Limburgers are almost Germans when they speak.. :)

So you must be able to understand it, and read it as well...
German and that bad, allthough I didn't quit like it in highschool, but learned it after I got my first car and joined a car club.
With it being a german car, a VW Scirocco, the people who came to meetings where mostly germans.... and when you spent a weekend with drunken germans, you learn a lot..... ;)

ill spend a weekend with drunken dutchies (dome and malle) and belgians (suga), so ill learn a lot too

and btw german and dutch are very close related to eachother --> both got their roots in german (tribe and language). dutch and german where almost the same untill the second sound change 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_German 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimm's_law 3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_German_consonant_shift. after that both languages went different ways, but they r still related to eachother. thats why its so easy for germans to learn dutch and vice versa.

Nah. Limburgs is still much different to german. But it's true that it's easier for Limburgers. But the problem with me is: I hate the german language. xD
If I don't have to hear it, I just don't. I hate it and I would never speak it. :p
That's probably also one of the reasons I forgot everything I learned in those lessons on school.

But I do understand the basics when someone's talking that shitlanguage, but nothing more. ;)

The only time I come in germany is when I go tank some fuel (much cheaper there). But that's a limburger who's working there at the cash, so I can just speak dutch/limburgs to him :D
