Firstly I'm amazed that I haven't come across this before, on this forum or any other. If it has been posted then I must have been in a cave that day (did a quick search but couldn't find anything). My lecturer told me about it at Uni today, it was the first I heard about it.

    <a class="postlink" href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-07-03-eu-rules-publishers-cannot-stop-you-reselling-your-downloaded-games" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012- ... aded-games</a>

Note that the article is dated over 6 months ago, so I guess Steam and the like have either blatantly ignored this, or found a way to circumvent the ruling. Either way I can't find anything other than the initial coverage of the ruling on multiple sites, nothing that details the follow up, or how Steam, Origin, Good Old Games etc reacted. If anyone can find it then please post here., otherwise, discuss!

Well the fact that you're allowed to, doesn't mean they have to do anything to make sure you actually can. For them the best way to handle this is probably try to make sure it gets the least attention as possible. And really, how can you resell a game you downloaded? The only way would be for the possibility to exchange the binding of the game to your account for a product key which you can enter for the game again. Then you'd be able to "give up" the game on your end, and resell it to someone else. The court does not say Steam, Origin and the likes of them must provide such an option.

Though it's a nice gesture, I don't see this mounting up to anything. Not until you'd be able to sell your bought games on the Steam Community Market.

But by Steam not providing such an option is denying the end user the possibility to, which is surely against that ruling. That is how I understood it anyway.

In my eyes it's only that the companies are not allowed to actively block you in doing this, nor can they sue you for this.

However. There is a big thing about this institution we haven't touched upon yet. As far as I understand, rulings by the European Court of Justice are not binding for everybody per se. Judges in each separate country could and should use these rulings in cases where they apply, but until that happens, it's not needed a law. It's kinda vague and I don't completely understand it. But as far as I do, I'd say Valve or EA wouldn't have to be doing this, until they get sued by a member state or inhabitant of a member state about this particular question. Then one or more judges will bow over it and use this ruling to base their ruling on.

    Or something.

    xD

I saw that news back then. Don't know anymore from where, (strangely I think it was here ??).

Also, just make a account for each game, and sell the account. There forums out there that actively do this. (I know, for the "buyer" of such accounts have been appealing....)

I thought that as well actually :p
But tbh I doubt steam will implement any feature to actually resell games soon if ever.

Also, I just noticed I'm in your signature kittens /slowpoke :D

Somehow I can only see bad things come from this. Valve might start calculating and tell Germany to fuck off and just stop selling there because it would probably be much cheaper than letting users re-sell their games. And if you're not careful, you Germans are going to make Valve quit the entire EU.

The EU is way to big a market for them to just quit, I wouldn't be surprised if they implemented it into the Steam market, where you can sell your games, but the money then has to be spent in the valve store/other market purchases. Whether that would fulfil their legal obligation I don't know.

    Certainly an interesting development.

Maybe you should re-read your statement and consider how much sense it makes.

    None, thats right!

I suppose Valve might allow selling games over the steam market at some point. Sounds reasonable to me.

well, those are unused games.... this is about "used" games, like games that are bound to your account.

tbh, It would then be only fair that VAC bans etc are then _also_ bound to the game....
