How to get into 6vs6

Hey Guys,

I've been playing TF2 for quite a while now and lately been thinking about trying to play 6vs6. Mainly because I want to try something different, since "normal" games can get a bit boring at times and also because I've been watching more TF2 pro plays (Thumbs up for EXTv).
I'm sure a lot of you guys have experience with this, and i want to know a good way to get into 6vs6. Maybe some of you can give me tips and hints on how to proceed and what's important in 6vs6. If I had to pick a class at that, I'd go Scout/Util. But first things first.
So, where's goog place to start? :p

Don't do it.

If you find pub play boring, you will quit the game after trying 6v6.

Believe me.

Go for highlander instead.

This is why Panromir can't have nice things. 6v6 is awesome with the right people and attitude. Just cause he might have had a bad experience doesn't mean you will.

The thing however with 6v6 is that you'll actually have people striving to reach something within TF2. Thats not the case on pub. And differences are hard to deal with cause we're such an internet generation. We just rage at monitors.

So if you wan't to play 6v6 competatively, read up, play lobbies, try some newbie mixes * find 1 (two?) classes you like and try and perfect them. When you think you're good enough, learn what is needed of you as that class in 6v6 competition.

ETF2L (European Team Fortress 2 League ** have some pretty good guides / helpful hints in their forums and a lot of other awesome material you can take into consideration.

But as it looks now, its hard to get into 6v6. As this season was an utter failure starting just when everyone had school and exams. It was a shite season. And getting into a good team requires "more" skill than the actual level you'll be playing. Mainly to compensate for the twats out there helping friends out in lower teams.

Panromir also suggested highlander, why? Its the same as public but co-ordinated and just copy-cat play. In the end it'll be whoever has the best deathmatch skills and gamesense.

And since I'm on a 'meh' mood today thats my 2cents.

Well my team was awesome. With 1 exception maybe.
I didn't remotely have a bad experience.

And still I wouldn't suggest anyone to start 6v6.

If you want to play something competetively, look for a game that is meant to be played competetively.

Oh and if you still persist on entering 6v6:
Learn to deal with a sad and massive amount of elitism that, in that form, cannot be seen in any other game, not even World of Warcraft.
I might also add that playing 6v6 will make you lose your interest in pub servers completely.

I guess we can agree on the fact that the experience you get very much depends on the attitude you go into 6v6 with and of course, your team and the people you meet.

That might generalize the whole topic and make my posts seem in vain but I also wanted to tell you that 6v6 isnt only awesome in every aspect.

And don't get me wrong, I don't want to stop you from trying.
Trial and error... :)

Highlander is a lot of fun also, but if can be frustrating if you're used to 6v6 (like me). Highlander on tf2 lobby is usually a lot more fun than 6v6 on lobby.

Totally wrong. Pink squad has been in 2 seasons now.

Sure, we may lose pretty much all games, however with all the right people and everything, we have fun doing it. We dont get serious, we dont flame one and other, and we enjoy playing.

May not be exactly the same now with LoL, uni commitments, not enough time etc, but if you want to get into 6 vs 6 and not be a serious team who folds if they lose a couple of games or someone cant take their medic making a mistake, then find a squad like Pink and just have fun.

Without wanting to start a huge discussion about this, but this is what you did with Neeko.
And I would say that less people have fun losing all games Pink style than you think.

There are squads who play for the divisional promotion and teams who just play for the lolz, I wouldn't suggest either way.

Hey JudgeFugde!

Going into the competitive scene of TF2 can be a great experience. What most of the people that have replied here seem to have missed, is to give you the right answer. I really hope they can stop their argument, or move it to PM/chats. This is pointless for you.

How to get into the scene? Basically it begins with picking a class. Maybe 2, if you really want to. Then find out through tutorials/friends how competitive play works. The rules, the do's the don't's etc. Make sure you've got Mumble installed. It's a Voice Over IP program that allows you to communicate with your team mates. (In case you didn't know)
If you don't have a buddy that could tell you about the basics yet, feel free to add me and I'll help you.

Once you know what to do, the next step will be joining a team. Most teams in Europe are registered at www.etf2l.org and they also look for new players there. (Recruitment) Ofcourse, it's also possible to create a whole new team of your own, but that's generally inadvisable if you are new to competitive altogether. Usually better to get some experience first. ;)

Scan the recruitment posts for something that fits you and apply. If you are convincing enough, they'll most likely ask you to trial for them. You'll be playing a match with the team to see how it goes. Both you with them as them with you. If both parties are happy at the end, you'll probably end up in that team.

When that has happened it's only a matter of time and practice. Things will fall into their place and you'll be like a fish in the water, moving freely and confidently around in the competitive scene before you know it. :)

Like I said, if you have any other questions or something, just add me on steam or pm me on the forums.

Thanks for your input guys, and thanks for your offer Killvion, I'll definitely get back to you on that.
And just to clarify, when i said regular TF2 gaming can get boring, I just mean it gets repetitive sometimes (for me) and something new would be fun. I mean, I play TF2 since the Orange Box came out and never tried anything else than pub play. Not that there's something wrong with that, I just want to try something new.
And also I want to improve my skill, especially as a Scout. Because I feel on a lot of maps with 24 people (or more :? ) playing, you die a lot to spam and crits as a Scout. And frankly, since TF2 turned F2P I have the feeling the overall skill got a bit worse (not so much on LZ and an few others, thankfully) and the first time i tried the automatch finding system valve implemented, i was almost shocked, how bad a lot of servers and players are. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact, that new players start playing TF2 and I've nothing against F2P players (except the raging ones :p ). Well, what i wanted to say was, I think if want to get better I need to take the next step and thats 6vs6 or highlander.

Anyway, I think I'll try the newbiemixes first (ty Wacked).
