They made a mistake themselves. There actually were 3 world wars. So the old man saying this either knows and is smart, or he doesn't know and just mixed it up. My fellow History geeks know what I'm talking about.
Euhm No....if you mean the cold war, that doesnt count in my book as a war... Or if you use "world war" as the definition and not as a historic period in time then yes we had many world wars in the past. Starting from the war over the Spanish succession in the 18th century. Plz dont make History any more confusing as it already is.
I realy like you guys, where else in the world can you get a philosophical and history discussion about WW? only on LZ forum, i realy like this. Please feel free to elaborate your thoughts.
what wikipedia says about World war(s): WW 1: <a class="postlink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I</a> WW 2: <a class="postlink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II</a>
Well actually I was referring to the 30 year war. This was during the 17th century. Europe was a mess. In percentages this was the bloodiest war ever to be fought. The European countries used their colonies in the war as well. Back in that time South America was represented by Spain, Asia by England and The Netherlands, Africa by France and England, Australia by England and North America by both Spain and England. All continents were involved, making this a world war. The term world war was made up after the second one. Before the 1WW was referred to as "The Great War". Later on we called it the First World war and then the Second World war, because they were so close to each other. Purely historical it should have been the 2nd and 3rd.
If you count that one as a world war, then we have like 5, 6 or 7 world wars (you can go back to the Mongolian invasion From Korea to Europe) Lets see euhm : Austrian successor war, The Seven years war (Winston Churchill said this was the first World War), American revolution war (secret war between France/Spain and England), Napoleon wars.... They should just kept The Great war and made WW2 Axis war or the aftermath, because after WW1 it just had Germany frustrated of there loss and we weren't exactly forgiving and asked 132 billion gold marks...leaving them much broker then a London chavy...and they started again just to get us back. After reading the Economic effects on 1920 with the hyperinflation...our system will be allright
No, World War = war involving all the continents, as Killvion already said. But that's not the topic.
haha waaay of topic... Actually the definition of a world war is: "a war in which the major nations of the world are involved" (dictionary stuff) As for the mongolian invasion, yeah thats a little to far, but not unlogical since they where the biggest nations at the time known... But as the rest: makes completely sense...as Spain, France, Austria, Great Britain and the Netherlands had colonies around the globe...So if the 7 year war counts for you as one, why not those others that also cover the globe and formost had the biggest country's standing accros each other.... To take the 7 year war again: the napoleon war had much more countries involved, but nothing beats WW1 and WW2 where almost the whole planet was involved... So as I said before plz let us not make it already more complicated then it already is....and keep WW1 and WW2.
It would make a nice fleshlight...but sucking not yet. Spoiler Yeah you are right the free Princeton dictionary blows... Oxford: "a war involving many large nations in all different parts of the world. The name is commonly given to the wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45, although only the second of these was truly global. See First World War, Second World War" But that gives us an other interesting point as only the last one was completly world wide war
Not really. The first WW was a WW because colonies fought for the actual starters. It was a European battle mostly. But in the 2nd WW Japan got the entire Pacific. So at that point it wasn't a colony from a European country but an actual Asian country that declared war to America.
