Not being able to connect to same server as friend

    So I got a friend over for the MvM update but there are some major difficulties.
    First off I got to say that the new matchmaking system isn't really doing it's job.
    Then second off when my friend is in a server I can't join that server, and when I'm in a server he can't join me.
    we are on the same network and really I have no clue what's wrong, google had no solutions, not even anyone with the same problem, so if anyone that have had this problem and been able to fix it could tell me how to fix it that would be very much apprechiated.

    As MvM came out, most of the players are eager to play it. All of our MvM server is full, or mostly full. The best chance for you two to play togother if you guys use the quene/matchamking system. I know, it takes lots of time before you can play one map, but as long as our servers are full, we can't do anything.

    Edit: I would have a question: was there a solt on the server when you guys tryed to join on each other?

    instead of trying to join his game, use the /connect server:ip on your console.

    Yes there were slots ready, and it didn't matter what gamemode it was we both got the same "connection failed after 4 retries" error message.

    Just trying to rule out all the possible problems, was he on a local/own created server?

    Sounds to me like you were playing on a Valve MvM server, you can only join those through the matchmaking, you can in no way connect directly to them.
