Try to verify the game cache.
Right click on your game in the steam games list --> local files --> verify game cache.

delete your cfg's (i had this when i changed my consolebutton) just move them somewhere else or rename them (.acfg or something) they will be replaced and maybe fix the problem, if so just put your key's back like you want

TF2 get's heavier on the pc every damn update. Some other members here have complained about that as well. But they just had fps lag etc. Not the inability to start the game.

    Try using windowed mode.
Right click Team Fortress 2 and go to its Properties.
    Click Set launch options
    Type -window

    Seems like something is corrupt.
    Tried a complete re-install of tf2?
Never hurts to try that, usually faster then trying to fix it ;)

Did you perhaps instal new video card drivers, or any other drivers?

Also try deleting the clienregistery.blob I know that nasty bugger is usually the cause of steamproblems.

No new drivers i think,,, and deleting clientregistry.blob doesnt do anything either! dam this is getting me down

Well here is a solution for L4D from the steamforums.

    **THE SOLUTION**

Here's the steps to do what I did and what led to the fix.

**Note** These are all steps that were taken after verifying game cache, if you have not done that, do so. How? Right click Steam Icon > Games > Right Click Left 4 Dead > Properties > Local Files Tab > Verify Integrity Of Game Cache

    1. Turn off steam

    2. go to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\addons and copy the contents of that folder to a back up folder (on your desktop or something). Once you do that there should be nothing in your addons folder that is in the \left4dead\addons folder just in your backup folder.

    3. Download the _master.cache I uploaded : http://www.filefront.com/15307219/_master.cache

    4. go to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\maps\soundcache\ and drop it in.

    5. go to C:\Program Files\Steam and delete ClientRegistry.blob

    6. Now restart steam, it will update.

    7. Start your game it should load properly.

After all that is done, you can slowly start putting addon campaigns back,
I haven't yet but I will report back if one of them screws the game back up. Hope that helped.

(For those that are curious where I got the _master.cache if mine was missing, I had my friend upload it for me and then I put it in. Don't worry the filefront file is completely safe and it's the one I'm currently using)

Big thanks to Silverado, CatatonicMan, Ab21392 for all the input. Deadly_Target for Spreading the Word! Oh and my sexy lovah (SS) RATM for the _master.cache!

    Much Love, Lori

I couldn't find the _master.cache (I don't think TF2 uses that) but I uploaded every cache thingy for team fortress 2 that started with an _ for you here. These where found in F:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\YOURSTEAMNAME\team fortress 2\tf\maps\soundcache. I suggest you delete your files that have the same name and copy mine in there.

I remember having seen similar issues with L4D2.
Can't remember exactly what fixed it then though.
It seems to me that your TF2 crashes when it has to start to play the intro video so try if you can start it when you skip it by default.
Add -novid in your shortcut and then try to start it. See if that helps.

Try to delete that key in registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam

    Helped for me once.

you have to remove it again.... cos everytime you start with it, TF2 starts with defaults.
it ignores about everything, and when closing, it writes its new config in registry and config.cfg....

if after removing it goes wrong again, its your autoexec.cfg thats giving problems..
