Whoever changes maps for LZ, and Admins, about 4starters

WHY DIDNT YOU ASK ME FOR IT?

Okay, no hate, i probably even get it... partially... so here's what happened:
I am the one who made Jump_4starters
And i was a little Irritated when QuBa recently asked me: hey, have you released a "_b1_fix" version of your map?

So i went out to investigate, and found your quiet little "easy Jump" server, with a version of my map, that i could bet i never compiled, with a name i would never have chosen.

to me, as a developer, and not from a management perspective:
    alpha: early version
    beta: content complete, not bug-fixed
rc: release version, minor bugs/glitches mb still in, but majorly bug-fixed and good to go

since i'm not finished with the maps jumps, i would never have called it "_b1" ... and the name makes it sound like i compiled a new version, just for you guys

BUT: thats not what actually really bothers me about it, though it may be the grain to tip the scale

WHAT really bothers me, is that someone decompiled my map (i can deal with that), changed something (i will get to what was changed later), AND SLAPPED YOUR DECAL IN THE SPAWNROOM, BEFORE RECOMPILING HORRIBLY ---- WITHOUT ASKING ME FIRST </rage>

sooo, to break that down: explanation of what was changed, and why it was necessary:

I browsed your forum and found a recent post about some guy trolling horribly, and putting teleporters under the spawn destinations you get to, after failing a jump, to make people go back to the start, or make em stuck in sentries, and similar idiotic maneuvers.

I agree with you, that stupid morons like that should be stopped from having the chance to behave this way!

So that is what was changed: no-build zones under the teleporter destinations, as well as the Decal in the starting room - and i think something about the gravity jump transfering outside via !teleport command was fixed, though i don't know how and what exactly.

like i said, the no-build zones were necessary, i just didn't know about that problem, since most jump_servers i go to have some kind of heavy admin control, to keep trolls out, or just forbid Classes the map was not designed for, so i just... was never made aware of the issue before - otherwise i would've already taken care of it myself.

And this is what bothers me about it: If you guys had just asked me for it, i would probably have compiled a version just for your server, and put the nobuild zones in myself, and even if i didn't have the time, for whatever reason, i would've probably given you the hammer file, so decompile couldn't mess it up.

But the way it happened now is: Someone else, who doesn't seem to have the most experience in those things (sry if i insult you with this, i can only go with what i see here) took probably a good portion of his time to decompile the map and put the *fixes* in for your server, and then recompiled the map badly.

Fly outside of the map in spec mode, and see what i mean - i don't even know how that happens, since vis seems to be included in the compile, and water is rendered at least half right... so no leaks, no fast compile... i don't even know... w/e
For those who don't get it: Usually when done right, if you fly out of bounds, you can see inside the map map, and see the rooms normally - but here you have a huge blurry chaos, as if staring into the void in a leaking map.

Also: whoever compiled this didn't HDR compile it, so the map looks... different... for those used to the hdr versions (no bloom, less contrast, less prettynezz)

And lastly: Water - reflections - any one?

overall: what bothers me about this:
1.) - I'll have to put in the fixes, too, one way or another, so whoever did this for you won't have the trouble to fix this in every version I'm gonna release in the future - also mb other servers have the same problem, and would like to keep engi activated, too - so yea... i'll definitely have to put in the fixes myself, too...
2.) - Icon in the start room, HOW DARE YOU O_O
    3.) - minor compile quality
    4.) - misleading name

What i hope for with this:
Some kind of explanation to why you guys didn't just contact me, or post the problem in the TF2 Jump forums, where i put all the new releases, as well as ask for bugs/problems/ideas for fixes/feedback in general.
To know what exactly the problems is, and what the hotfixes involved were exactly, so i can fix the problems for future releases.

I DON'T want you to take down the version you are using atm, since i don't have the exact old compile of it any more, and a recompile would most likely destroy peoples !saves, so hurt the community more than it would help - just keep it up for a few more weeks / mb a few months, till the new version is done.

So don't feel offended, i understand why you did it, i understand why you needed to rename it (version conflicts... seen my fair share of those by now...), i just don't get why you didn't just... ask... yea...

    greetings and happy jumping, gg

also, sorry for the long rambling...

I'm actually surprised it took a map creator that long to come to our forums and state his concerns.

You are absolutely right to do so, and I am not a map "creator" here, but can only apologize for it.

They should have contacted you about it, they should have asked you if they're even allowed to change it and, if not, they should have proposed fixes.

In fact there are quite a lot of maps that have been fixed to works properly on our servers, something I personally disliked as well was puttin the LZ logo in them, but I suppose this happened because nobody ever expected a map maker to turn up and make a point.
Usually it's really hard to find or contact the maker of a map anyway, unless he is noted in the map properties (does hammer allow this? I know the Unreal Editor does).

Now as for the bad image this version might give you: Can you provide a link to a thread or so where you keep your up to date version posted?

You are right, our mapmakers should go to the official mapmaker to ask permission. But on the other hand, you can't claim the map that it's your map only for yourself ofcourse. Valve can only do that if I'm right.

I just say that we need permission from the mapmaker himself, but the mapmaker can only blame us for "fixing" his map. Nothing else.

I'm not a mapmaker at LZ.

To be honest this is the first time we changed a map i think besides saxton hale maps (where we usually change maps and slap a logo on it just for advertising) however these maps never leave "our" servers. We also dont advertise it as our maps (sure the logo would seem otherwise, but we dont say "created by lz")

In fact, we actually had someone that wanted to do a takedown request for a map. But since we had this map running for perhaps a year now we didn't see the need for it. This person flamed as hell and insulted me personally. Which ruins any chance of removal of that map.

You ask it nicely and explain your actions to the point that even if you wanted us to take it down i would comply with it because of the way you address it. But you also understand that there was a need to "fix" it. That being said our map makers do usually slap that logo on a bit big sometimes, it could be a bit smaller, but its just so they have a link back to the website (logo is the same)

And lastly, because of this in the past i added this disclaimer on our saxton maps (which should have been placed somewhere on the jump maps too)
http://wiki.lethal-zone.eu/display/tf2/ ... y+template which basicly says we can alter content which we do and do listen if mapmakers come forwward (unless they are behaving badly, which one did in the past)

I've added you to my steam, if you need any other details or have a newer version at some point ready, then please let me know.

Anyways, sorry for not finding you in the first place, our intentions where not to be the rotten egg here :)

By "law" as people usually say, any map made and/or edited using sourcesdk's hammer editor is not a property of anyone other than valve. Anyone else can edit and change stuff within the map if he/she wants since this is how many mappers learn to work their magic. After recompiling there's 2 outcomes out of it. One if decided to publish one MUST inform the original maker of that and give him credits for creation, also discuss further actions with him, BUT on the other hand if the map is NOT GOING TO BE PUBLISHED anywhere on any site or put up in other communities with our knowledge, then it is perfectly fine editing the version without informing anyone about it.

You should be aware of this since by what you say you are an experienced map maker for source engine.
This is by no means a way to insult you, this is just a statement and if you really are offended by this you could discuss a few details with the guy who recompiled (not me) this is based on friendly relationships, nothing by law. Just pure friendship :)

Anyhow. Cheers and as you say gl jumpin'

There's a difference between "law" and "ethics".
Just because law allows one to do something, it doesn't mean one should do it, or even wants to do it. :)

As I explained in the previous post. It can be discussed in a friendly environment. It's another type of discussion though. Also another few problems occur when trying to get in contact with the maker since :
-Hard to find him (nobody signs or if they do it's secluded)
-If signed still can't find over steam since the username is different and steam finds via username
-Over other forums half use other nicknames so impossible to know if it's really the original maker
-This goes on for a while but I'll end it with this, many just say no or won't agree to it.. or will object, demand something and be really unpleasant to talk to while being on the subject of it..

To close it off we didn't publish any of these.. and all these maps are just in LZ, THEY WERE NOT LOCKED so if anyone republished it you should track them down not LZ members..

    Cheers~

Also a fun note, if you find the mapper and you want to add him to steam. Almost 99% declines. Now i know for jump maps i need to go to the tf2jump server, but its hard to keep track of it all :)

I added him/her for reference and so far nothing (to give a example) but then again its weekend, could be out partying with a dozen hot chicks or guys.

yea, i was gone for a week, sry about not answering earlier:

about the law - ethics thing - i agree with morrolan - just because its legal doesn't necessarily mean you should be doing it

but like i said, i'm not mad or anything, and i kinda get why it had to be done

the only thing i am a bit frustrated about, is that i still have to put the fixes in myself - its just... double the work... and luckily i stumbled over it myself, otherwise whoever *fixed* it for you, would have to do the same for all future releases, too.

Soooo, it would be really peachy if whoever changed the map could step up and tell me what exactly was done and where it was done, so i can implement it myself and he/she wont have to do the work again... :D

*edit because the normal grinning smiley looks evil - something about the grin and the eyebrows seems very upsetting to me... :) just look at him...*

i could give you a little german, if that helps :p

oookay, so it was you who fixed the map?
would it be okay for you to add me in steam? i just want/need to know what exactly you did to stop the trolls, so i can put it in for future releases, too ^_^

As far as i know, he changed all the teleports to no-build. So normally when you fail the jump somewhere you get teleported back to a certain spot. That spot needs to have a no-build, because they would place a teleporter there. Perhaps check some logical places where engy's could annoy people. I think there is a spot where you jump ontop. I made a mini plugin myself that would ensure that people cannot damage or do knockback. So even if teams are not divided correctly, you cannot kill eachother. Same goes for the "moving" of players. If you sit inside another player, normally the other player starts to move. Its a setting in tf2 to remove this, i've done this on all rocket jump servers too.

Snelvuur, there should be places where engineers could build their stuff. It's also funny to go with engineer through the maps... It's not only for soldiers and demomen, they also made some maps for other classes like scouts and engineers.

Thats why i said, only the places where you get teleported too, around that spot should still be buildable for the engy's.
