His and mine don't count? And why make your mother plural?

*ahem*

@Killvion:
Isn't the point with mine/yours/his/their etc. that they are possessive pronouns? So you don't need to "make" them possessive by adding a "'s" anymore?

I know, I should have written this like a page before, but the truth is..
That when you're talking with somebody you can even say "I is a game play" and they'll pretty much understand you.
We've got that expression in polish - "Kali jeść, Kali pić" which translates as "Kali to eat, Kali to drink" (Kali is a name of a character from one of the Sienkiewicz's books, "W pustyni i puszczy" - here's the link to english wikipedia article about it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Desert_and_Wilderness ). No matter if you write "valve is" or "valve are" people will understand you.

It's not about being understood in a simple minded conversation, it's about being correct in a formal letter to your superiors or future employers. It's getting an A+ on my English writing exam. All these kinds of things. I've been able to make my self understood for the past 4 years.

Really? How often do you use English in a formal way, instead of your native language? I know that on an exam being correct is important, but even if you're living in an English-speaking country you'll be using informal English most of the time in a normal conversation (it doesn't have to be simple minded..) and most of the time you could get away with such a small mistake as "valve are" (my example with Kali was a bit extreme). As you all know (probably..) or at least can read at my profile page, I'm not from English-speaking country. I travelled around the world few times, been in UK many times (first time when I was ten ^_^ ) and not one time I've heard "Hey! You should say something instead of what you said, because despite the fact that I understood you, you were incorrect!".
Hey, maybe I'm saying that because I fell quite comfortable with English, while in reality anyone whose native language is English is screaming at his/hers monitor "YOU INCOMPETENT MORON, THAT WORD RIGHT THERE IS SPELLED DIFFERENTLY"

First of all from what I've heard people in the UK would never correct you, simply out of politeness. :lol:

Second of all, I debate. And I debate competitively at quite a high level. As in international scales. These tournaments are all in English and often the judges came flying over from Oxford, because they house the best debaters in the world. Those guys are very well aware of any mistakes in your speech, but besides that, you also have to write motivations to join certain competitions or write essays on a certain motion and then send it in for them to judge.

These are things where I HAVE to use correct and formal English. As they directly matter for your chances to get selected. Besides that I'm seriously considering to work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here in the Netherlands as a diplomat or consul. In these branches of work you're ought to master the English language completely both writing and speaking.

So you might understand that I can't permit myself to make stupid mistakes in the future. I have to learn as much as I can. :)

This thread has strayed so far from its original topic. I thought i'd just state the obvious.

Oh well, I guess I didn't think of that ^^
As for debates - I remember I've read some topic of yours when you explained all of this, but when I was writing the 2 previous posts I simply forgot that you were doing that. In such case - yeah, I see why you want to be 100% correct now :) That doesn't change the fact that in a every-day life you don't have to be 100% correct, though. Unless you're working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ofc ^.-
That's what's beautiful on the forums :) You start with the sony failing and then you get to being correct in English :D

It's not like anyone has even tried to post something that was about this topic. So unless you come with more news, who cares?
